PREDOMINANT WEATHER IN THE STATE: Warm and sub-humid with rains in summer.
THE RAINY SEASON: From May to October.

TUXTLA GUTIÉRREZ
ALTITUDE: 550 meters above sea level.
WEATHER: warm and sub-humid with rains in summer.
ANNUAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 25º Celsius.

 

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS
ALTITUDE: 2, 140 meters above sea level.
WEATHER: Fresh and humid with rains in summer.
ANNUAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 18º Celsius. The winter is with frosts from November to February. The temperatures can go down until 0º Celsius. In San Cristóbal the weather in the morning and night is cold.


COMITAN DE DOMINGUEZ
ALTITUDE: 1,560 meters above sea level.
WEATHER: Warm and humid with rains in summer.
ANNUAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 26º Celsius.

CHIAPA DE CORZO
ALTITUDE: 406 meters above sea level.
WEATHER: Warm sub humid with rains in summer.
ANNUAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 26 º Celsius.

 

PALENQUE
ALTITUDE: 60 meters above sea level.
WEATHER: Warm sub-humid with torrential rains in summer.
ANNUAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 26º Celsius.

 

AGUA AZUL, MISOL HA, BONAMPAK and YAXCHILAN (THE LACANDONA JUNGLE)


The weather is humid with a temperature from 25º to 35 º Celsius. We recommend to carry comfortable and cotton clothes and comfortable shoes. We don´t recommend shorts and sandals because in the jungle there are mosquitos.

 

 

Where to Eat

 

In Chiapas you will find all kinds of food: local, regional food, Mexican, Italian, Spanish, French, Argentine, Arabic, Thai, Indu, Lebanese foods among others.

 

Night Life

 

For the lovers of the night life. The city of San Cristóbal de Las Casas offers excellent alternatives to know this beautiful colonial city at night.


For the people who want a quiet evening, to talk with friends or the family, they can visit coffee shops and restaurants with live music, located in the downtown and on the pedestrian streets.


The activities are so varied depending on the taste of the visitor. In the center of San Cristóbal de Las Casas you will be able to find numerous bars and discoteques with variety of music (salsa, merengue, cumbias, bandas, duranguense, reggae, ska, music of the moment, étc), where you will be able to enjoy a beer or wine and to demonstrate your better steps of dance.


In Palenque: Palenque is a small town, there are not many places to dancing.

 

Banks

 

In the main cities in Chiapas you can find many banks and money exchange.

 

. In San Cristóbal: BBVA Bancomer, Banamex, Santander Serfin, Banorte, Bansefi, Scotiabank Inverlat, Banco Azteca, HSBC and others.
. In Palenque: Only Bancomer and Banamex.
. In San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan: There are not banks.
. Is necessary to carry during the tours enough coins for shopping.
. In San Cristóbal de Las Casas you can find money exchange.
. For visiting Guatemala, we recommend you change Pesos or dollars to Quetzales into the Border (La Mesilla) due to that the rate is better and to change only the necessary, because if you return quetzales to Mexico it is more difficult to change them.

 

 

Additional Information

 

. There are mobile telephone services in the cities of: Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapa de Corzo, San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Palenque and some places of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan. There is not mobile telephone services in highways, the Lacandona Jungle and Archaeological sites.
. The internet service in many places is wireless and in the cities you can find cybercafés.

 

Recommendations

 

If your aim is to enjoy to the maximum your visit to Chiapas, bear in mind these practical advices in order that your stay is sure and pleasant.

 

. Don’t buy products elaborated with turtle shell, animal skin, ivory, etc.
. Respect the customs of the different cultures and etnias that you visit in your trips. There are etnias that their beliefs prohibit them be photographed. Please RESPECT THEM!
. There are paintings, altarpieces and altars that the light of the flash harms them.
. Don’t throw any trash in lakes, woods, rivers, parks, beaches and cities.
. Avoid damaging the ecosystem and follow the instructions of the place visited.
. Avoid to walk out of the ways and paths.
. Don’t introduce flora and fauna foreign to the zone.
. Don’t carry “souvenirs” like stones, plants, fruits, shells, etc.
. Acquaint yourself with the local customs. What is courteous in one country may be quite the reverse in another.
. Remember that you are only one of thousands of tourist visiting this country and do not expect special privileges.
. When you go shopping, remember that the "bargain" that you obtained was possible alone due to the low salaries paid to the manufacturer.
. Travel in a spirit of humility and with a genuine desire to learn more about the people of your host country. Be sensitively aware of the feelings of other people, thus preventing what might be offensive behavior on your part. This applies very much to photography.
. Cultivate the habit of listening and observing rather than merely hearing and seeing.
. Instead of looking for the beach paradise, discover the enrichment of seeing a form different from the life with other eyes.
